Mary Armstrong Watt, age 92, of Rice Lake, WI died Friday, August 24, 2012 at Thomas Landing in Rice Lake. She was born November 23, 1919 in Pittsburgh, PA to James C. and Mary (Armstrong) Watt. Mary received her B.S. degree from Bouve’-Boston School of Physical Education in affiliation with Simmons College in 1940. A veteran of World War II, Mary enlisted in 1943 in the Women’s Army Corps and served until 1946. She then received her M.S. from Wellesley College in 1948 and her Ph.D. from the State University of Iowa in 1954.
Mary taught at Chatham Hall, VA, Wellesley College, MA, Mankato State Teachers College, MN, and at Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH where she retired in 1978. Mary received numerous professional accolades during her career. She was honored by being selected to award an honorary doctorate to Dr. Margaret Mead from BGSU in 1965.
In 2007, Mary was named Outstanding Citizen of Bowling Green at the annual Chamber of Commerce meeting. Mary had been active on the board of the Wood County Committee on Aging since 1988 and managed a database of more than 5000 seniors. Because of her skills and ability to reach students, BGSU named the resource center in Eppler Hall in her honor. Upon moving to Rice Lake in 2007, Mary began to volunteer with the Lakeview Hospital Guild.
Mary loved to travel and visited every continent with the exception on Antarctica. During her life she visited locations as distant as Point Barrow, AK, a photo safari of Africa and the Galapagos Islands. In 2000, she visited Hong Kong to see the Millennium Fireworks show and a cruise to the Caribbean and through the Panama Canal to San Francisco.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents, an infant brother, and her beloved sister, Margaret “Peg” Elliott.
Mary is survived by her niece, Blakeley (Gene) Beatty of Birchwood, WI; 2 nephews, Jay (Valerie) Elliott of Oxford, OH and Clark (Jeanna) Elliott of New Richmond, WI; as well as many loving grand and great grand nieces and nephews.
Mary will be laid to rest in Pittsburgh, PA in the Homewood Cemetery in the family plot. No services are planned; In memory of Mary send any memorials to Lakeview Medical Center Home Health and Hospice program in Rice Lake.
